Overview of Statistics Programme (Thur)

The statistics programme with ITLC aims to provide a user with a thorough understanding of statistical analysis, from hypothesis creation, the mechanics of entering and manipulating data in SPSS to statistical analysis and drawing conclusions.

There are 8 classes in this Statistical Analysis course. The details of each class are outlined below. It is suggested that they are attended in the following order:

Fundamental Statistics

01 February,  1 - Introduction to Statistical Analysis This workshop is for those who are completely new to Statistics and are going to undertake quantitative research.

08 February,   2 - Managing and Manipulating Data This workshop is for users who are familiar with entering data as variables and with to prepare the data in preparation for statistical analysis.

15 February,   3 - Introduction to Null Hypothesis Significance Testing. This class will introduce concepts of null hypothesis significance testing, p-values, normality testing, Standard Error, Confidence Intervals.

22 February,   4 - T tests This class will build on the concepts of null hypothesis significance testing, introducing the three types of t-tests.

29 February,  5 - ANOVA These are a collection of inferential statistics commonly used to analyse the differences between group means and their associated variations.

07 March,  6 - Correlation and Regression This class will explore the relationships and correlations between two continuous variables.

14 March,  7 - Nonparametric Testing A This class will introduce modern statistics like Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests.

21 March, 8 - Nonparametric Testing B This class builds on part A, and also introduces new statistics like Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, Spearman and the unique Chi Square for the analysis of categorical data.

The IT Learning Centre team provides a programme of IT related workshops to help you develop essential computing skills which will be invaluable during your time at the University and in the workplace.  Each semester we publish a new programme of workshops which are free of charge for students and staff, they range from introductions for users with very little experience to more advanced topics.  If you are not sure which IT workshops you would like to attend, why not check out the workshops overview
