Essential Skills & Master Classes
Delivered live via Microsoft Teams, this series of interactive one-hour workshops is designed to develop your ability to apply MATLAB in mathematical and engineering contexts. Each session blends hands-on coding with key concepts, taking you from fundamentals to advanced applications.
These workshops will cover the following areas:
Session 1: Essential Skills 1A – Basics & Variables
Date: Wednesday, 29 October 2025 (13:00 – 14:00)

MATLAB interface tour (Command Window, Workspace, Current Folder, Command History)

Creating and naming variables

Data types: scalars, vectors, matrices

Essential commands (clc, clear, who/whos)
Session 2: Essential Skills 2A – Operators & Maths
Date: Wednesday, 05 November 2025 (13:00 – 14:00)

Arithmetic operators and order of precedence

Built-in functions: sqrt, log, exp, abs

Rounding, floor, ceil, modulus

Scientific notation and variable updates
Session 3: Essential Skills 1B – Arrays & Matrices
Date: Wednesday, 12 November 2025 (13:00 – 14:00)

Creating row/column vectors and arrays

Indexing and modifying elements

Matrix operations: element-wise and matrix multiplication

Special matrices: zeros, ones, eye, rand, diag
Session 4: Essential Skills 2B – Plotting & Visualisation
Date: Wednesday, 19 November 2025 (13:00 – 14:00)

2D plotting with titles, labels, legends

Multiple plots, subplots, bar, hist, pie, log scales

Plot customization (colours, styles, markers)

Intro to 3D plots: plot3, mesh, surf, contour
Session 5: Master Class 1C – Programming & Functions

Function syntax and .m file management

Anonymous functions and handles

Function scope and workspace interaction
Session 6: Master Class 2C – Data Analysis & Input/Output
Date: Wednesday, 03 December 2025 (13:00 – 14:00)

Logic and control: if/else, for, while

Input/output functions (input, disp, fprintf, sprintf)

Data analysis: mean, std, sum, sort, max/min

Saving, loading, and debugging
