Essential Maths Workshop
Probability: Core Skills & Techniques
Delivered live via Microsoft Teams, this focused workshop is perfect for any BU student preparing for probability-based mock exams, coursework or research projects. Whether you need a rapid refresher or want to deepen your understanding, our interactive two-hour session will boost your confidence and fluency with randomness, events and uncertainty.
This workshop will aim to cover the following areas of Probability:
-
Basic probability concepts & notation; probability scale (0–1) and total probability.
-
Venn diagrams & set notation (union, intersection, complements).
-
Independent and mutually exclusive events—how to recognise them and use the rules.
-
Conditional probability with worked examples; interpreting P(A|B).
-
Probability trees for multi-stage processes; total probability and “at least one” events.
-
Discrete random variables—distributions, finding missing probabilities, mean & variance.
Expect hands-on examples drawn from the workbook, including Venn-diagram questions with real counts (e.g., vehicles by propulsion and city) and pass/fail tree problems for sequential tests.
Why not complete the Probability Quiz before the workshop?
